The manufacture of zelliges is a complex craft process. It all begins with the shaping of terracotta tiles, which are then glazed in a variety of shades. After glazing, the tiles are cut by hand by skilled craftsmen, often into a square shape, enabling them to be assembled into unique, personalized designs. This precision work results in mosaics that can be used individually or to create compositions, such as kitchen splashbacks, tables or wall panels.

The beauty of zellige lies in its shades and irregularities.
Handcrafted tiles are not perfect, which is what makes zellige so charming. You'll need to accept around 5 % of possible defects and breaks, which you'll use for cutting. Zellige tiles should be laid on a clean surface. For damp rooms, you'll need to apply a coat of waterproofing, as your substrate must be perfectly watertight before you start laying.
It is preferable to mix the colours randomly in order to achieve harmonious color variations. on your support, and set aside those used for cutting.
This is an edge-to-edge installation with a maximum 1mm joint, using double glue. Choose a flexible glue (waterproof if the room is damp). In humid environments, we strongly recommend using a waterproofing membrane to prevent water from seeping into the zelliges and blackening the joints.
Make sure that the adhesive is in direct contact with the tile, leaving no sharp edges. Allow to dry for about 48 hours.
Wet your zelliges before grouting, choosing a water-resistant liquid grouting mortar, and don't hesitate to repeat the operation several times so that the mortar fills the joints well. Finally, clean with water several times before the cement film appears and polish with a cloth to finish. Do not use acid on zellige.
