Old Provençal canal tiles in large quantities. Old tiles recovered mainly in Provence and Languedoc-Roussillon. The color of old terracotta canal tiles varies from batch to batch, remaining in light pink-beige tones. In Provence, the tiles used go by several names: canal, which is the main designation, round, hollow or Roman tile. Imported by the Greeks from the Orient, they were later adopted by the Romans, from whom the current shape was inspired. Legend has it that, in the past, salvaged tiles were molded from the potter's thigh, giving them a narrow shape around the knee and a wider one around the groin.
